Founded as Jamaica’s first transgender-led and transgender-focused advocacy organisation, TransWave Jamaica works to advance the rights, visibility, health, safety, and wellbeing of transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNCNB) people across the country. For over a decade, the organisation has championed initiatives that promote dignity, inclusion, and equal access to opportunities and services for TGNCNB Jamaicans.
TransWave Jamaica engages in advocacy, public education, leadership development, and direct support services to strengthen the community’s capacity and resilience. The organisation conducts sensitisation sessions with institutions, service providers, and community groups to increase awareness and foster more inclusive environments for transgender and gender non-conforming people. It also develops policy briefs, digital campaigns, public advocacy initiatives, and opinion pieces that amplify transgender voices and promote human rights protections.
In addition to advocacy, TransWave provides community-centred support through psychosocial assistance, mutual aid programmes, care packages, and referrals to vetted trans-friendly services. The organisation also addresses gender-based violence affecting TGNCNB persons by promoting survivor-centred responses, safer spaces, and greater awareness of discrimination and violence.
Recognising the intersection of social vulnerability and environmental challenges, TransWave integrates climate justice into its work by advocating for inclusive disaster preparedness and climate resilience. Incorporated on June 26, 2017, TransWave Jamaica remains committed to strengthening self-representation, community leadership, sustainability, and trans-inclusive legislative and social change throughout Jamaica.
To promote change which results in the social inclusion, recognition of rights, and legal protection of the transgender and gender non-conforming community.
To see a Jamaica where transgender and gender non-conforming persons are included, affirmed, and enjoy all of the universally recognized human rights.
Since 2019, TransWave Jamaica has been a sub-sub recipient of the Global Fund Grant through the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) and Jamaica AIDS Support for Life (JASL). The organisation undertook referral services under the grant, linking members of the Trans community to HIV prevention and treatment services as well as undertaking psychosocial support interventions and behaviour change communication.
